Every time that you become emotionally upset, the experience is stored in your subconscious mind. When you remember the incident, or have something happen which is similar, the memory is triggered and also the emotional charge which is attached to it. There is an interference in the normal energy flow through the body which feels “bad” in some way.
Emotional Freedom Technique was devised by Gary Craig, an engineer and NLP practitioner, in the 1990s. EFT is based on this understanding that all negative emotions are caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system. If you correct those disturbances then the emotional upset will dissipate.
A simple process is used where firstly the therapist helps the client to “tune in” to specific issues, while at the same time stimulating certain meridian points on the body by tapping on them with fingertips. The process can be done by the therapist or by the client themselves – whichever they prefer.
Sounds crazy? But it works!
With remarkable consistency, EFT relieves symptoms. The tapping releases the blockages that are created when a person thinks about or becomes involved in an emotionally disturbing circumstance. When this blockage is released, the emotions come into balance. Once balanced, the person cannot get upset about the circumstance. The memory remains but the charge is gone.
I will discuss with you the specific issue you would like to work on and use this as a starting point for the session. If you don’t want to say specifically what this is or don’t want to go into any details, that’s fine, you don’t have to. The EFT will still work anyway!
I will then ask if you would like to be ‘tapped’ on or if you would prefer to mirror the tapping sequence, demonstrated by me.
I will work with you to decide on a phrase to tap on and complete a Set-Up phrase.
You will then tap on specific meridian points to release blockages in the meridians while saying aloud words and phrases that reflect the issue to be worked on.
I will constantly check in with you as to what the level of emotion is being experienced. This will decrease as more tapping is done.
Finally I will show you how to use EFT for self-help.
EFT often achieves success in one or two sessions and sometimes does it in moments. Instead of taking months or even years using conventional talk therapy, EFT can achieve results in a fraction of the time.
This is difficult to determine beforehand, as each person and their life experience is unique. Almost everyone experiences benefits after the first session and some people find that one session is all that they need. Most people benefit from a series of a few sessions. Emotions, habits, and physical pain have many aspects and layers to them which may need more than one session to fully address.
By comparison to almost any other process, EFT is gentle and rarely has any serious side effects.
EFT works whether you believe in it or not. Generally once people start getting results this creates belief in the process anyway and that this can then positively impact the therapeutic process.
